NEF Annual Grants Awarded
By Kish Pisani
It's official. With the 2015 slate of Naperville Education Foundation (NEF) grants, the organization has awarded more than $1 Million since the Annual Grant Award Program began in 1993!
"What always amazes me no matter how many applications we receive, is the level of excellence in the writing, the level of creativity and innovative programming," said Ann E. Spehar, Executive Director of NEF. "It's so heartwarming that even though the teachers have so much to do, they are always interested in going the extra mile to provide an exceptional opportunity for our students," she added.
This year's grant program saw applications in all six of the categories: Cultural Studies, Fine Arts, General, Health & Physical Development, Literacy and Math & Science. The projects are initiated by students, faculty, staff, parents and community members in District 203. Spehar notes that the popularity of categories may vary from year to year, but this year they noted a surge in applications in Math & Science. Each year the Annual Grant Awards program has awarded up to $50,000 in grants with the exception of $75,000 in 2012, the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the organization.
The NEF Program Committee added a new twist to the Annual Grant Award program this year. One grant winner in each category was awarded the "NEF WOW Prize." Members of the committee surprised the winners in late March with a celebration at their school when they received a special award complete with balloons and a certificate.
Programs are slated to begin in the 2015-16 school year with some starting this summer.
A huge, heartfelt thank you to all of our donors for making the Annual Grant Awards possible!
